A mitred square

Friday, February 13th, 2009

I had a very creative day today. I took a days holiday from work and went to a Creative Craft Show with some friends. It certainly was creative and very inspiring. There were stalls and demonstrations of all sorts of crafts. I got ideas on cardmaking, jewellery making, machine embroidery and knitting.

I could have spent a fortune at the stalls because there were so many exciting products, but I was careful not to get too carried away and managed to find some good value items that were a bit different.

As I was looking round, I saw a piece of knitting made up of squares where the stitches went round a 90 degree angle! I’d never seen anything like it before and it facinated me. The angle showed up well because the squares had been done in multi coloured yarn. As I was looking at it and asking the knitters about it, they told me that there was going to be a workshop later in the afternoon where I could be shown how to it.

By the time I’d finished walking round I was tired and needed to sit down so the workshop was just at the right time. A lovely lady called Sue gave me yarn and needles and instructions and I knitted my first mitred square! Now all I have to do is think of something that would look good knitted in them!

Summer, Autumn and Winter colours

Friday, October 31st, 2008

I don’t like it when summer comes to and end and it starts to get cold. When August turns to September, I have to be careful to keep myself busy and to do creative things, such as my photography, card making and knitting. I have learned from experience that if I don’t do that, I can get very down.

I love the colours of summer with it’s blue skies and brightly coloured flowers, and everything looking better with the sun shining on it. It seems to give everyone a lift if it’s sunny. I can feel quite sad when I know that the summer is slipping away, and there’s no more opportunity to go to a sunny seaside with it’s gorgeous yellow ochre sand and lovely turquoise sea and beautiful blue sky – colours that all looks so amazing together. A short holiday by the sea can really refresh and renew me.

By October it has got colder and darker in the evenings, but bright Christmas colours are starting to appear in the shops. When the clocks go back and it’s dark by 6.00pm and there are red and gold and sparkly Christmas things in the shops, then I start to feel better because that’s the signal that it won’t be long until my Birthday! I still get that feeling of excitement about my birthday that I did when I was young even if it may not be celebrated so much now as it was then. Only three and a half weeks to go!

One of my passions in life is photography. Another one is using the photo sharing website Flickr.
I love looking at other people’s photos, which I find very inspiring. I make comments on them, and in turn they make comments on my Photostream. I haven’t been using Flickr for very long, just since May this year, but I have just reached 6000 veiws of my photostream, which is very exciting!
Even though I love Flickr, it does have one drawback – it’s very addictive and time consuming!
But it has stopped me watching the television, which can’t be a bad thing. The only thing is that you can’t do anything else at the same time as playing on Flickr, except listen to music or the radio. When I’m watching television I can do something creative as well, such as knitting or card making.
I must do some knitting – I want to make some knitted hats to go into the shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.
